Ivan Pavlov appears here in a half-length pose with his arms folded, a stance that suits the self-assured physiologist of the late 1890s. The print was made as an illustration for his 1897 Saint Petersburg book on the work of the body's main digestive glands, the study that would make his name. Pavlov's experiments on dogs, which measured saliva and gastric secretion through surgically prepared animals, led him toward the conditioned-reflex work for which he later won the 1904 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Photomechanical reproduction allowed such images to appear in scientific books of the period at modest cost.
