Lucas van Leyden's 1517 engraving of Golgotha, the hill where Jesus was crucified, survives here in a second state, identifiable by the date that was not reversed on the plate. Lucas, a Leiden-born artist who began engraving as a teenager, cut his lines in copper with a fine, precise hand that made his prints widely collected across Europe during his lifetime. The initial and date are cut into the plate itself, a signature practice that helps scholars trace which impressions came from which stage of the plate's use. Scenes of the Passion were among the most popular subjects for religious prints of this period.
