Albrecht Dürer's engraving of the Prodigal Son, dated around 1496, draws on the parable in the Gospel of Luke, in which a younger son squanders his inheritance and ends up tending pigs. Dürer made the plate when he was about twenty-five and was already building his reputation through prints, which could be sold and circulated far beyond the reach of his paintings. The careful rendering of figures, animals and landscape shows the fine, controlled line that made his engravings admired across Europe. Impressions of the plate spread widely, which helps explain why the image remains so familiar today.
