Camp Pingree, a Detroit military encampment, is the subject here, and the record places the picture somewhere between 1900 and 1910, when the site was in use. This view is one of four glass negatives that the Detroit Publishing Company made as a single panorama, so the tents and open ground are meant to be read as one continuous scene when the sections are placed in order. The company was known for photographs of towns, landscapes, and everyday life across the country, and its views of camps like this one offer a clear record of temporary military life in the years before the First World War.
