Zero Mostel appears here in costume as Leopold Bloom, the Dublin advertising canvasser at the center of James Joyce's novel *Ulysses*. The portrait dates to late October 1958, when Mostel was playing Bloom in *Ulysses in Nighttown*, a stage adaptation of the book's Nighttown episode. The role was a major comeback for Mostel, who had been blacklisted from film and television in the early 1950s. The portrait was made by Carl Van Vechten, a photographer known for his sitters from the worlds of theater, music, and literature.
