This portrait shows Tyrone Power, the matinee idol best known for swashbuckling roles such as Zorro in the 1940s, and the title ties it to *John Brown's Body*, Stephen Vincent Benét's Pulitzer Prize-winning verse epic about the Civil War. Power was appearing in a stage production of that work when Carl Van Vechten made the portrait on March 3, 1953. Van Vechten, a writer and photographer who moved easily among theater, literary, and film circles, took many portraits of performers, and this sitting shows Power in a stage-era setting that was a departure from his film image. The print belongs to Van Vechten's large celebrity series, which his estate gave to the Library of Congress in 1966.
