Few lighthouses are as famous as the copper figure Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed for Bedloe's Island, though its torch was meant to guide ships into New York Harbor rather than mark a coastline. France gave the statue to the United States as a gesture of friendship, and it was dedicated in October 1886 after years of fundraising on both sides of the Atlantic. Gustave Eiffel engineered the iron framework inside the copper skin, which has weathered over the decades to the green patina visitors know today. The lamp in the raised arm was the statue's working light, and it is worth noticing how it was built into the monument's symbolism.
