The lighthouse here is shown standing among a cluster of low buildings beneath a heavy, stormy sky, with the contrast of black and white giving the tower a sharp, dramatic outline. Coastal light stations like this one were often surrounded by keepers' quarters, storehouses and outbuildings, so the grouping of structures around the tower tells a good deal about how these isolated posts operated. Lighthouses of this kind guided ships past hazardous shorelines, and their weather-beaten settings make them favorite subjects for photographers and printmakers working in monochrome. Looking closely at the clouds and the shadows on the walls, you can sense how exposed such a station was to wind and surf.
