Minot's Ledge Light stands on a rocky reef offshore from Scituate, Massachusetts, a site so exposed that the first attempt to build a lighthouse there ended in disaster in 1851, when a partly finished structure was destroyed by storms and several workers died. The tower that replaced it was completed in 1860 and became a landmark for ships approaching Boston Harbor. This 1867 stereograph, issued by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, shows the light as a viewer of the period would have seen it, and its paired images were meant to give a sense of depth when examined through a stereoscope.
