Owls Head Light stands on a rocky headland at the mouth of Penobscot Bay, near Rockland, Maine, and this small color lithograph from about 1870 shows it in the years when the tower was among the most visited marks on the coast. The Owls Head station was first lit in 1826 and has been a working beacon ever since, guiding vessels past the ledges that run along the shore. The record also points to fishing and the rugged coastline around the light, reminders that the lighthouse sat within a working maritime community. Lithographs of this period were often sold as souvenirs and navigational keepsakes, so the print offers a view of how the coast was pictured for a public eager to see it.
