Highland Light, the lighthouse at North Truro on the tip of Cape Cod, is the subject here, and this view is set at night, when the beam would have been the picture's main event. The tower has stood on the bluffs of the Outer Cape since 1797, making it one of the oldest lighthouses on the Massachusetts coast and a landmark for ships rounding Cape Cod. The photograph dates from about 1964 and is held by the Library of Congress, where it is catalogued among the lighthouse and night views from that decade. Its low light and long exposure give the tower a quiet, solitary presence against the dark sky.
