Guarding the entrance to Delaware Bay, Cape Henlopen is a sandy point where ships have needed a light for generations, and this view records the lighthouse there as it looked around 1891. The print was issued under the copyright of N.L. Stebbins, a Boston firm that sold photographs of lighthouses and coastal scenes to a public that enjoyed images of the nation's shorelines. Its catalog record places it among the 1890s photographic prints, a period when seaside landmarks were popular subjects for both travelers and collectors. Worth noticing is how the tower stands against open sky and dunes, showing the stark, isolated setting that made such lights essential to navigation.
