St. Louis in 1918 was a major river port and manufacturing center of roughly 750,000 people, with shoe factories, breweries, tobacco plants, and rail yards that drew workers from across the Midwest and from abroad. The United States had entered the war in 1917, and the city's civic life was organized around Liberty Loan drives, war bond rallies, and patriotic gatherings, many of them linking the American cause to France. The city's large German-American community found itself under suspicion that year, which made displays of loyalty to the Allies a matter of public concern. In October 1918 the influenza epidemic forced St. Louis to close schools, theaters, and other public gatherings, so a group photograph like this one captured a moment before that disruption. The armistice came only weeks later, in November.
