The poster advertises a 1936 Big Tent theater production of *Abraham Lincoln the Great Commoner* in Illinois, the state where Lincoln built his law practice and political career. It was issued under the Federal theater Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, which employed actors, designers and artists during the Depression and took live theater to towns that rarely saw it. The poster is attributed to an artist named Carken and printed as a silkscreen, a relatively inexpensive method the WPA's poster units used to produce large runs of advertising.
