Uncle Sam, the symbolic figure of the American government, appears in this 1918 call to women to join the war effort, a message the National League for Women's Service promoted to recruit volunteers for home-front work. The title credits Charles Dana Gibson, the illustrator best known for his Gibson Girl drawings, but the record also names Paul Bruno as artist, so the attribution is worth checking against other sources. Posters like this one show how wartime recruiting combined familiar national symbols with the idea that women's labor was a patriotic duty.
