Mabel Thorp Boardman, a longtime leader of the American Red Cross, is shown here with women delegates to the organization in a group portrait dated around July 18, 1917. The United States had entered the First World War in April of that year, and the Red Cross was rapidly expanding its relief, nursing, and home-front work. Women volunteers and organizers were central to that growth, and Boardman was among the most prominent women directing it. The photograph was made by the Bachrach studio, a commercial portrait firm, so it reflects the formal conventions of studio group portraiture of the period.
