Six-year-old Jim Waldine and nine-year-old Sam Frohue, both of Philadelphia, stand at Theodore Budd's bog in Turkeytown, near Pemberton, New Jersey, in September 1910. Their record says each had been picking cranberries for two years, and it notes that Sam could not spell his own name. The workers were in the fourth week of the Philadelphia school year and planned to stay two more weeks at the bog. Lewis Hine made many photographs like this for the National Child Labor Committee, and his images of children at work helped build public support for child labor laws.
