Two sisters, Camille, age seven, and Justine Carmo, age nine, stand at work in the Eldridge Bog near Rochester, Massachusetts. The record notes that the older girl picked about four pails a day, and that the younger one was picking too. Cranberries were harvested by hand in the autumn, and the crop was closely tied to the Thanksgiving table that the gallery's board refers to. Photographs like this one, taken in 1911, were part of the National Child Labor Committee's effort to document children working on farms, bogs and in factories.
