Seven-year-old Annette Roy and nine-year-old Napoleon Ruel were both recorded at Smart's Bog in South Carver, Massachusetts, where Annette was noted as the youngest worker on the harvest. By their own accounts, the two children lived in Fall River, a mill city where many families relied on every paycheck, including those of children. Autumn cranberry picking drew families and young helpers into the wet bogs to harvest the fruit by hand. Photographs of working children like these were often used by reformers to show the public what that labor looked like.
