Photographed at Smart's Bog near South Carver, Massachusetts, in September 1911, this scene catches the cranberry crop just before harvest. Bogs like this one were flooded and sanded beds that needed seasonal crews to gather the berries by hand or with scoops before they were sorted and shipped. Cranberry sauce had become a fixture of the Thanksgiving table, so the autumn work on southeastern Massachusetts bogs was timed to meet that holiday demand. Look closely at the workers and their tools to see how much of the early cranberry industry depended on manual labor.
