Two young girls are working among the vines in this September 1911 view of Eldridge Bog near Rochester, Massachusetts, where the smallest child, Merilda, picks alongside her sister. Cranberry harvests in southeastern Massachusetts relied heavily on family labor well into the early twentieth century, and children were often put to work sorting and gathering the berries. Bogs like this one were flooded or drained by hand-dug channels and ditches, and the autumn harvest was a busy, seasonal effort. The photograph offers a close look at how the work was shared across generations.
