A boy named Dante Fava, who gave his age as 10 and lived in Pierceville, Massachusetts, is the subject of this picture, taken at the Eldridge Bog near Rochester. Lewis Hine made the photograph in September 1911 while documenting child labor for the National Child Labor Committee, and his notes say the boy carried and picked cranberries. The harvest drew workers of all ages to the bogs of southeastern Massachusetts, where the fruit was gathered for markets that would later supply holiday tables. Hine's photographs of working children were meant to build public support for laws limiting that labor.
