A five-year-old named Salvin Nocito carries two pecks of cranberries to the "bushel-man" at Whites Bog in Browns Mills, New Jersey, on September 28, 1910. Lewis Hine made the photograph while documenting child labor for the National Child Labor Committee, and his caption names a witness, E. F. Brown, who vouched for the scene. Cranberry harvests in the Pine Barrens relied heavily on family labor, with children picking berries by hand and being paid by the measure, so the picture shows how young workers were drawn into the season's work. It remains one of the clearest records of who harvested the fruit that ended up on holiday tables.
