Victoria Talme is the named subject of this September 1910 view of Whites Bog in Browns Mills, New Jersey, one of the larger cranberry operations in the Pine Barrens. The photograph belongs to a set of documentary images made that year by Lewis Hine for the National Child Labor Committee, which was campaigning against children working in the fields and bogs during the autumn harvest. Cranberry picking drew whole families, including many children, into seasonal work that was often hard and poorly paid. The pictures from that trip remain among the best records of how the bog labor force looked at the time.
