Brothers Nick Cechini, age 10, and Joe Cechini, age 12, are the subjects here, and their caption records how long each had been picking cranberries: three years for Nick and five for Joe. Their home address on Deliheigh Street in Philadelphia places them among the city families who travelled each autumn to work on Theodore Budd's bog at Turkeytown, near Pemberton, New Jersey. The notes add that it was already the fourth week of the Philadelphia school term and that the family would stay two weeks more, which shows how harvest work pulled children out of class. Notes like these were often gathered by child labor investigators documenting conditions on New Jersey cranberry bogs in the early 1900s.
