Eight-year-old Richard Tevor, who lived on Jones Street in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia, had already spent five seasons picking cranberries when this was taken at Theodore Budd's bog near Pemberton, New Jersey, on September 27, 1910. The caption notes that it was the fourth week of the school year back home and that the family expected to stay at the bog two more weeks, a common pattern that pulled city children out of class each autumn. Cranberry harvests drew migrant families from Philadelphia and elsewhere, and photographers such as Lewis Hine, working for the National Child Labor Committee, recorded children at this kind of work to build support for reform.
