Bessie Gonsalve, who told photographer Lewis Hine she was 11, stands at Hollow Branch Bog near Wareham, Massachusetts, in September 1911, picking and carrying cranberries. Hine was documenting child labor for the National Child Labor Committee, and he often recorded what his subjects told him, along with their home towns and how long they expected to work. Bessie lived in Harwich and planned to stay several weeks more, which shows how the late-summer harvest drew families, and their children, to the bogs for much of the season.
