The White House received its holiday dress in 1938, when the Executive Mansion was filled with Christmas decorations during the Franklin D. Roosevelt years. The record names the building itself and its decorations as the subject, so the picture is less about a single ornament than about the state rooms being readied for the season. Holiday displays at the mansion were a long-standing public ritual, and this photograph captures one of the more formal moments of the Depression-era presidency, when the house was both a family home and a national stage. The print is a useful glimpse of how the building looked to visitors at the close of the 1930s.
