A doorway and the building around it are the focus of this 1922 view of a warehouse connected to the Federal Reserve, a system the United States created in 1913 to stabilize its banking and currency. The photograph was made by Irving Underhill, a New York photographer whose commercial work recorded the city's streets, commercial buildings, and architecture in the 1910s and 1920s. Because the picture centers on a door and its surroundings, it documents how a functional structure presented itself to the public during a period of rapid growth in lower Manhattan.
