The title names a "federal edifice," which this etching shows as the former New York City Hall at Broad and Wall streets, later known as Federal Hall. It appeared in the August 1789 issue of *The Columbian Magazine*, a Philadelphia monthly, only months after George Washington took the oath of office on the building's balcony on April 30, 1789. The city hall had been adapted for the new national government, and Congress met there until the seat of government moved to Philadelphia in 1790. Engravings like this one carried images of the new federal government to readers far from New York.
