Rather than a view of a place, this is a reproduction of a painting titled *The Bathers*, shot as a glass plate negative measuring 7 by 5 inches. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated from the 1890s into the 1920s, photographed both landscapes and artworks so that its images could be printed as postcards, books, and albums. The title and date come from a 1912 Thistle Publications volume that used the company's work, so the picture likely served the same purpose of making a painting available to viewers who could not visit the original. Its glass plate format reflects the photographic technology of the period, when such negatives were the standard way to produce many copies.
