Here the burning town of Pasig, on the Pasig River just outside Manila, rises behind a battery of American artillery, with a gunboat in the foreground that points to the river war. The conflict between American and Filipino forces broke out in February 1899, and fighting along the river in the months that followed left several riverside towns in flames. Perley Fremont Rockett, a San Francisco photographer and publisher, copyrighted the print, and his photoprints of the campaign reached American viewers eager for news of the war. The caption data is unverified, so the exact date of the burning should be read as approximate.
