Kiyomizu Temple, perched on the wooded slopes of Kyoto's eastern hills, is among the city's best-known Buddhist sites, founded in the late eighth century and famous for its wooden stage projecting over a steep ravine. This picture shows priests at the temple, part of a set of four photographic prints from the years between 1915 and 1925 in the Kanji Collection. The record is based on an old caption card and has not been verified, so the exact occasion and the identities of the men are unknown. Still, the scene offers a glimpse of temple life in the early twentieth century, when Kyoto drew growing numbers of Western travelers eager to photograph its shrines and monks.
