Taken on February 18, 1924, this glass negative shows Secretary of the Navy Edwin Denby with a group of newspapermen. Denby was under heavy press and Senate scrutiny that winter over the Teapot Dome oil leases, and he resigned from the Cabinet in March, so the picture catches an official whose tenure was nearing its end. The National Photo Company, which documented Washington political life through its large holdings of glass negatives, made the exposure. The streaks and blemishes visible on the plate come from natural deterioration of the original coating.
