Sebastopol, a small town in Sonoma County, gave its name to this apple crate label, which promised "Quality" fruit grown in California's north coast orchards. Labels like this one were printed in bright color lithography and pasted onto wooden crates so that buyers in distant markets could recognize a grower's brand at a glance. Sonoma County's apple belt flourished in the early 1900s, and its orchards shipped fruit by rail across the country. Notice how the design combines a fresh red apple with the town's name, a common strategy for building trust in a product the buyer could not inspect before it arrived.
