Sebastopol, in Sonoma County, became one of the best-known apple-growing towns in California, and this crate label shows how growers used bold color lithography to sell their fruit. The "Queen" brand name and the phrase "Quality California Apples" were meant to catch the eye of buyers in crowded markets, when fruit was shipped in wooden crates and the label was often the only advertising a grower had. Early twentieth-century crate labels like this one were printed in large runs, and today they offer a glimpse of the packing-house trade and the regional pride that went into each box.
