Lead with what sets this label apart: it advertises apples grown at Paradise, a Butte County town in the Sierra foothills, under the Sawmill Peak brand. Crate labels like this one were pasted onto wooden shipping boxes in the early twentieth century, when Northern California orchards sent fruit by rail to markets across the country. The bright lithographed art was meant to catch a buyer's eye at the grocer's stand, and it also tells us how growers pitched their product. Paradise later became best known for the 2018 Camp Fire, which destroyed much of the town, so the label now also records a vanished orchard community.
