Bird Valley was a fruit-growing district in Northern California, and this crate label shows how growers used bright lithographed art to sell their apples in the days before supermarkets packaged produce. Labels like this were pasted onto wooden shipping boxes so that buyers in eastern cities could recognize a grower's brand at a glance. Early in the twentieth century, California's citrus and deciduous fruit industries relied heavily on such labels, which often pictured orchards, sunlit valleys, or fruit piled high to suggest quality. The phrase "Selected" on the label signaled that the apples inside had been graded and sorted before shipping.
