Uncompahgre Valley, in western Colorado near Montrose, was known for irrigated orchards, and this crate label advertised its apples under a brand name that tied the fruit to that place. Colorful crate labels like this one were printed by the millions in the early twentieth century, when growers shipped fruit by rail to eastern and midwestern markets. The bright lithographed art was meant to catch a buyer's eye on a crowded grocery shelf, so the label did as much selling as the apples themselves. Look closely at the lettering and the regional name, which show how growers used the valley's identity to set their fruit apart.
