Unlike the apple labels around it, this crate label promotes pears, and its brand name, Ballerina, sets it apart among the many fruit packers who competed for buyers. Labels like this were pasted onto wooden shipping crates so that a buyer far from the orchards could recognize one grower's fruit on a rail platform or a grocer's shelf. California's pear districts shipped large volumes east by rail in the early twentieth century, and bright color lithography was an inexpensive way to make one packer's fruit stand out. The word "Selected" signaled a graded pack, a promise of more uniform size and quality.
