Crate labels like this one were pasted onto the ends of wooden shipping crates so buyers could tell at a glance who had packed the fruit and where it came from. The "Bellboy" name is the kind of brand a grower or packing house chose to stand out on crowded grocery shelves, with the bright chromolithographed artwork doing the selling. Labels of this type were printed in large runs by commercial lithographers in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when orchard fruit was shipped by rail to distant cities. Although the board groups it with apple labels, the pear in the name marks it as a pear label, and it is worth noticing how the design relies on color and bold lettering to be read from across a fruit stand.
