Mount Hood, the snow-capped peak in northern Oregon, appears on this crate label as the emblem for the Gloriosa brand, a name that suggests the showy color and quality its growers hoped buyers would associate with their apples and pears. Labels like this one were pasted onto wooden shipping crates so that fruit sent by rail to eastern markets would stand out on crowded produce-dealer shelves.
