Far West Brand is a crate label for Northwest apples, and the design reflects the commercial pride of the fruit growers who shipped their harvests by rail to distant markets. Crate labels like this one were pasted onto wooden boxes so that buyers in eastern cities could recognize a grower's brand at a glance. Apple labels of the early twentieth century often featured bright chromolithographed fruit, scenic landscapes and romantic names, all meant to make ordinary produce feel desirable. The "Northwest" in the name points to the orchard districts of Washington, Oregon and Idaho, which grew into major apple-producing regions as irrigation and rail service expanded.
