Few crate labels from the early twentieth century carried as much visual punch as the ones printed for apple shippers in the Pacific Northwest, and this one stands out for its "All American" brand name, a bit of patriotic branding aimed at buyers in eastern markets. Crate labels like this were lithographed in bright colors and pasted onto wooden boxes so that a grocer could spot a favorite grower's fruit across a crowded display. Such labels were part of a larger shift in which growers and packing houses used advertising art to build recognizable names for their produce, turning a plain commodity into something shoppers could ask for by name.
