Buddy Brand is a crate label, the kind of printed paper pasted to the end of a wooden apple box to sell the fruit inside. Its slogan, "The Northwest's Finest Apples," tells you the grower was marketing to buyers who could not see the fruit before they bought it. Labels like this were a major advertising tool in the early twentieth century, when Pacific Northwest orchards shipped apples by rail to markets across the country. Their bright chromolithographed art, often showing fruit, children or landscapes, helped a grower's name stand out in a crowded freight car or grocer's stack.
