Few crate labels in this group carry the name of a specific packing house, and this one stands out for its pairing of two Northwest growing districts, Hood River and White Salmon, along with Yakima. The Hood River Valley on the Oregon side of the Columbia Gorge and the White Salmon area across the river on the Washington side were both known for orchards, and the Yakima Valley farther east became one of the largest apple-growing regions in the state. Labels like this one were printed in bright color lithography to catch buyers' eyes on crowded produce shelves, and they helped build the regional reputations that shippers promoted across the country in the early twentieth century.
