Hood River, Oregon, became one of the leading apple-shipping districts in the Pacific Northwest in the early twentieth century, and crate labels like this one were the main way growers sold their fruit to buyers far away. Brightly colored lithographed labels were pasted onto wooden boxes so that a brand name and a bold image could catch the eye on a grocer's shelf or a railcar platform. The Webster Brand label is a good example of that practice: its name and artwork were meant to build trust in a particular orchard or packing house, so that a shopper would ask for the same fruit again. Such labels are now valued as small works of commercial art and as records of the region's orchard economy.
