Crate labels like this one were the advertising of the Pacific Northwest orchard trade, pasted onto wooden boxes so that a grower's name would catch the eye on a railcar platform or a grocer's shelf. This example comes from the Glenn Williams Co. of Yakima, Washington, a valley that became one of the region's major apple-shipping centers in the early twentieth century, when irrigated orchards and the railroad made long-distance fruit sales practical. The "Williams Brand" name and its bright color printing reflect the competitive effort growers put into packaging, since a recognizable brand could command a better price than unmarked fruit. Labels such as this one are now valued as small records of regional agriculture and of the commercial lithography that was common at the time.
