Lucky Trail is the name that sets this crate label apart from the many apple labels on the board, and it points to the trade in which these labels were used. Fruit crate labels like this one were pasted onto wooden shipping boxes so that buyers in distant markets could recognize a grower's brand before opening a crate. California's growers sent large volumes of apples east by rail in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and bright lithographed labels helped them compete for shelf attention. Notice the "Fancy" grade word, which signaled the top packing category, and the vivid colors that were meant to make a plain box stand out.
