Titled in French, *La Chasse aux Grives* shows a walking hunt that ends with dead birds, as the thrush hunting in its title suggests. Thrushes were widely shot and netted for the table in nineteenth-century Britain and France. This small watercolor over pencil was made for a periodical, a common outlet for sporting scenes that gave readers a view of country leisure. Its place on a clothing and dress board points to the figures' field attire, such as the heavy coats, boots, and caps that men of the period typically wore for tramping hedgerows and fields.
